Nike Davies-Okundaye: The Cultural Legend of Nigerian Art

· Exclusives
Section image

Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye, affectionately known as "Mama Nike" is a visionary artist, cultural ambassador, and philanthropist whose name has become synonymous with the promotion and preservation of Nigerian art. As the founder of the Nike Art Gallery, one of the largest galleries in West Africa, she has dedicated her life to empowering artists and showcasing the richness of African culture. With a career spanning decades, her contributions to the art world extend far beyond her own creative endeavors. She has nurtured generations of artists, championed traditional Nigerian textile techniques, and built institutions that serve as cultural sanctuaries.

Born in 1951 in Ogidi, Kogi State, Nigeria, Nike’s artistic journey began under the guidance of her great-grandmother, who introduced her to the intricate world of Adire (tie and dye) textiles. This early exposure ignited her passion for Nigerian arts and crafts, leading her to establish multiple art centers, including the renowned Nike Centre for Art and Culture in Osogbo. Through these institutions, she has not only preserved Nigeria’s artistic heritage but also provided opportunities for young and emerging artists to thrive.

Her impact transcends creative expression. As a philanthropist, Nike has tirelessly worked to uplift disadvantaged women and youth by equipping them with artistic skills to achieve financial independence. Her influence extends globally, with her exhibitions, lectures, and workshops spreading the beauty of Nigerian art across continents. Recognized both nationally and internationally, she remains a pivotal figure in shaping the future of African art.

We Had the opportunity to have a quick sit down with a Legend during her busy hours at the office and this is how it went.

Reynolds:

What inspired the creation of the Nike Art Gallery?

Nike Davies: My parents. I was born into the arts and was fortunate to travel to the U.S. in 1974. My goal was to have a voice, and as an artist, our voice is our work. When I returned, I realized that artists needed a platform to share their stories through their creations. That’s what truly inspired the gallery to bring artists together and amplify their voices.

Reynolds: What is the vision and mission behind the gallery?

Nike Davies: Our mission is to connect artists directly with collectors, ensuring that their work is seen, appreciated, and sold. I also strive to promote both male and female artists equally, creating opportunities for all. The gallery serves as a space for artists to meet their customers and share the stories behind their creations. It is about fostering dialogue through art.

Reynolds: How does the gallery support emerging artists?

Nike Davies: We provide a platform for new artists by showcasing their work. Initially, we hosted exhibitions every week to highlight young talent, but we later allowed other galleries to take on that role while we continued supporting artists through our biannual exhibitions. We also focus on female artists, particularly every March 8th, when we celebrate their work through special exhibitions.

Reynolds: Your personal style is very unique. How do you merge your artistic vision with fashion?

Nike Davies: I call it wearable art. I create pieces from recycled materials, turning trash into treasure. This approach allows art to be mobile it’s not just confined to walls but can be worn and displayed in everyday life. Many of the pieces I wear are made by young artists, giving them exposure and opening up new creative possibilities.

Reynolds: What are some of your most memorable moments in the gallery’s history?

Nike Davies: One of my most cherished moments was when I hosted 250 artists for the gallery’s opening. Seeing both young and seasoned artists come together, interact, and celebrate their craft was truly fulfilling. It was a powerful reminder of the role art plays in building a community.

Beyond her work in the gallery, Nike Davies-Okundaye shares a deep creative connection with Grace Hats, a brand that redefined the art of traditional Nigerian headwear. Nike speaks passionately about Grace’s influence in reviving the Gele (head tie), turning it into an iconic fashion statement for women across Nigeria and beyond.

Nike Davies: Your mama (Graces hats) is an artist, and her work is about crowning women with their rightful elegance. Her creations have brought Gele back into the spotlight. Before, many women preferred wigs, but now, thanks to Grace, they embrace traditional headwear with pride. Professor Wole Soyinka even called it "wearable heart," a symbol of identity and culture.

As our conversation with Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye concludes, one thing remains bold her passion for art, culture, and empowerment continues to inspire generations. Her work is not just about creating art; It is about creating a movement that honours African talent and innovation.
